Around-the-world:

*Ferdinand Magellaan's expedition (1519-22) provided the first conclusive proof that the world is round. Magellaan however died during the voyage, and Captain Juan Sebastian del Cano and the surviving seventeen sailors became the first people to circumnavigate the globe in a single voyage.

*Sir Francis Drake’s epic voyage around the world (1577-80) aboard the Golden Hind is considered the first successful one, because Magellaan died during his voyage. Magellaan died during a fight in the Philippines between two conflicting Philippine parties.

*Francis Chichester, who was the first Brit to complete a solo voyage around the world (1967), was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, with the same sword used by Queen Elizabeth I about four hundred years earlier when she honoured Francis Drake for his voyage around the world.

*Steve Fossett swam the English Channel in 1985, and during the following two decades he participated in dogsled-racing in Alaska and the Le Mans 24Hour; between 1994 and 2002 he undertook the first balloon flights over the South Atlantic ocean, Indian and Southern Pacific oceans and over the main continents. He also set up the 'around-the-world-sailing', airship-speed, and straight line gliding records. In 2005 he became the first to fly uninterrupted around the world, without taking on any fuel. He did this in the Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer in 67 hours, 2 minutes and 38 seconds.
In 2002 he also finished the first uninterrupted solo balloon flight around the world, in the Bud Light Spirit of Freedom. It took him a mere thirteen days – more than six times faster than Jules Verne’s heroes in his 1873 novel, Around the World in Eighty Days.

*1847: HMS Driver arrives at Spithead, England - the first steam ship to sail around the world.

*In 1898 Seaman Joshua Slocum (USA) completed the first solo voyage around the world aboard Spray. It was possibly the first around-the-world-lecturing tour, because he gave lectures everywhere he came in order to sustain himself.

*1933: Pilot Wiley Post (USA) is the first person to fly solo around the world in his Lockheed Vega monoplane Winnie Mae. It took him seven days, eighteen hours and forty-nine minutes.

*In 1960 the nuclear submarine Triton (USA) completed the first underwater voyage around the world.

*Robin Knox-Johnston (England) completed the first uninterrupted solo voyage around the world between 14 June 1968 and 22 April 1969, aboard Suhaili.

*1978: Naomi James (Nieu-Zealand) is the first woman to sail solo around the world.

*1999: Brian Jones (UK) and Bertrand Piccard (Switzerland) complete the first uninterrupted balloon flight around the world, in the Breitling Orbiter 3 in fifteen days, ten hours and twenty-four minutes.
