Lee Iacocca had this idea for a certain place in the market for Fords. Donald Frey brought the prototype in reality. But Iacocca didn't like it, and did some revisions. Frey's first design was unveiled in 1962. After that they based the design on the Falcon and Fairlane.

But the first production Mustang was built in March of 1964.
